“You could say I have healing in my blood - both my parents were nurses! I considered a life purely as a researcher but was inspired to enter medicine after my mother’s complicated diagnosis and the on-going struggle with breast cancer. I vowed that if I became a physician that I’d be an advocate for patients to eliminate experiences like hers and maintain empathy to treat my patients like family.
I grew up in sunny and culturally diverse South Florida. I was fortunate to attend Duke University and graduate with a degree in Cell & Molecular Biology with a minor in Chemistry. Then, as now, I was fascinated with how the body heals and how regeneration occurs. I spent several years in a formative translational research position in cancer biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston - a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. I continued in Cleveland, Ohio to complete my medical (MD) and graduate (Ph.D.) degrees at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic. My Ph.D. thesis concentrated on stem biology and regenerative medicine, which continues to be the focus of my current research, with expertise in hair and scalp disorders.
People often ask me, “why hair?” On a personal level, I used to have lots more hair - growing up, I was known as “mop-top.” While I’m fortunate to still have most of my hair (I do everything I can to keep it!), it’s definitely not what it used to be. I completely relate to my patients who highly value their hair. Most of my patients are surprised to learn that I care about their hair as much as they do! I’m passionate about cutting through the clutter and noise to find treatments that work, and I am constantly scouring scientific literature for new technologies that might be helpful. I then use my training as a researcher to understand and test new therapies for the future.
Professionally, it’s extremely rewarding to help patients improve their health and restore their confidence. I think I have the best patients in the world and love what I do!”
