The Pilaris Process
"Listen to the patient, (s)he is telling you the diagnosis." - Sir William Osler
Listening is the most important activity at Pilaris and all visits begin this way. Most diagnoses and plans can be made by simply listening to the patient and understanding their history and goals. We will also ask questions - many questions(!) - to help us refine your story and understand how we can best help you. Whether you are looking to keep a full head of hair or seeking to regain lost hair, we are here for you.
During this portion of the visit, we will collect a great deal of information about you. We like to have your previous records in advance, but if not, we will cover them here.
After our information gathering, we need to examine your scalp. We will assess several parameters to help us with our diagnosis, including our general impression of hair quality, scalp changes, degree of hair shedding, and formation of new hairs.
Documentation begins with photography. Our experts will position your body and hair under controlled lighting settings to take a series of photographs of your hair and hairline. These images are essential in comparing your progress at future visits.
Measurement of your hairline and hair density is performed using defined anatomical landmarks for reference and reproducibility. Our specialized technology allows us to take high power, magnified images of the scalp and then convert this information into numerical scores. We account for several parameters including density, hair caliber, follicular units, and terminal to vellus hair ratios, among others.
For visits with a physician, patients will be provided with a diagnosis. If necessary, a biopsy may be performed to assist in diagnosis. Laboratory assessment may also be needed.
We will spend the time with you to explain what the diagnosis means, our understanding of its causes, and the type of response you might expect with therapy.
There are numerous options when it comes to hair therapy. We will review the 8 categories of hair therapy, the pros/cons of each option, and mutually decide on the best treatment plan for you.
Pilaris only utilizes scientifically-backed treatments.
Our mutually-agreed upon plan will be implemented a) treating you in our office, b) sending prescriptions/laboratory requests, c) coordinating your care with other physicians, and d) making sure you understand how best to use your therapy.
Our care extends after your visit and we will follow up with you to check in on your progress and address any questions you may have.
Using a combination of your standardized photographs and the measurements from ScalpSurvey, we will track your hair progress and determine if a change in treatment plan is necessary. For many people - even those not on therapy - knowing if or when their hair numbers are changing gives them peace of mind.
